A collection of architectural works : ranging from the Mississippi Delta to the middle of the ocean...
This educational institution is a true embodiment of classical design and pedagogy. Not only does its architecture feature classical elements, but it also adheres to the classical model of education, which is based on the trivium and quadrivium of knowledge. The principles of classical education dictate certain requirements for the architecture and layout of the school. One such requirement is the inclusion of a "Harkness" Room, a space dedicated to fostering discussion and debate among students. Another requirement is the presence of a Chapel or other sacred space.
The plan for the school is organized around two central axes. The Chapel is situated towards the east, while the library is located towards the west, with the classrooms, administration, and cafeteria occupying the central space between them. This layout was carefully considered to establish a theoretical argument between the Chapel, which symbolizes faith, and the library, which represents fact. This debate between faith and fact reflects the mission of classical education which is to place the classrooms, where the learning takes place, in-between.
